2016 was a year of inflection-while the nation grapples over women`s rights and gender roles there lies a movement of strong, smart, and passionate women who are channeling their creative energy and expressing their values through their art. Shailah Maynard is a brilliant designer that is able to evoke so much emotion though her brand Working Girls Co.
Founded in 2015, Working Girls started out as a concept-featuring fun *hot bod*” pool floats (think giant boob float) and screen printed socks with movie titles starring strong female brands like “Mystic Pizza”. Shailah`s unique ability to untangle what it is like t be a woman in fun and humorous light through her thoughtful pieces, makes us at SECARE eager to see what is next coming out of Cincinnati, Ohio.
Lately, I have noticed a lot of artists and designers coming out of Cincinnati, Ohio-is there something in the Ohio water?
Cincinnati has tons of creative and talented people. The University of Cincinnati's DAAP program graduates hundreds of fashion/industrial/graphic designers per year. In years past, once designers graduate from the program they take off to bigger cities, however slowly people are realizing what an amazing city this is, and the opportunities are endless for creatives (cheaper rent, bigger spaces, lots of inspiration/collaboration etc...) It's why I moved back! I wouldn't be surprised if you hear more and more about Cincinnati over the next few years.
What influences Working Girls?
I attended a progressive liberal arts college, where I studied Art; inclusion and diversity are intrinsic of who I am and is reflected in Working Girls. I choose not to take life seriously. In every product I produce- humor, inclusivity, and diversity are all embodied in every piece.
What’s your power suit?
Having confidence is the most important suit of all.
