Meet Lindsey Kaalberg, founder of Ritual Hot Yoga where you practice and breathe to the beat of the music in a luxurious all-inclusive candlelit setting. When you take a class at Ritual, be prepared to tap into another world where your only responsibility is to indulge in your senses.
Lindsey is a powerhouse-yogi, entrepreneur, and a true visionary for the future of yoga; a true force to be reckoned with as she is steadily transforming the yoga industry one breath at a time. Ritual Yoga is a place like no other for those there to practice and for those who instruct, Ritual Yoga is one of the only yoga studios that provide full-time benefits to all their instructors. Instructors are compensated not only as full-time employees but are also given development opportunities and a clear career path.
What motivated you to go with such an unconventional business model?
When I first discovered yoga I was in college and my connection to it was instantaneous, I knew it was my life calling. However, being part of the yoga community also meant being paid very little and or nothing at all. The struggle is real. The majority of fitness studios pay their instructors as independent contractors which means zero health benefits, sick time, and often fair compensation. It was frustrating. Yoga was my passion, my life, my everything and I started to hate it.
Why aren’t more studios doing the same?
I think it’s a matter of time, hopefully. It is important to treat your instructors as well as your clients. If we want more people to practice yoga, we have to make sure the studio benefits the whole community. I would encourage folks who are interested in this business model to come by Ritual, it would be great to collaborate!
What keeps you motivated?
I had several potential investors believe in my vision to create this premium yoga experience but did ask me to ditch the full-time employee piece of the business model. For me, it was something I was not willing to compromise. It’s important that my instructors feel empowered when they come to teach. Positive energy is transferred to how we practice and shapes peoples’ experiences at Ritual.
When did you know you wanted to be an entrepreneur?
I always knew I would be an entrepreneur, it was just a matter of when- when I was right years old I received a teddy bear from my grandfather that had entrepreneur embroidered on its foot I always knew that being an entrepreneur was part of my destiny and I have been very lucky to be able to pursue this path.
What is your power suit?
Have you seen the Friends episode with Joey and he puts on all the clothes in his closet? Well mine is a version of that-I start with a beautiful piece of lingerie, flared jeans, flowy crop top that shows just enough skin, a fitted blazer, stilettos, and my hair is slightly wavy in a loose top knot.
